UPDATED: Coppola's New Sonoma Winery Hits the Road for Out-of-Town-Tryouts?

Posted 07-25-10 at 12:55 AM

UPDATE: We're Open! If you’re planning to come by to take advantage of our Out-of-Town Tryouts, reservations are required. Please give our Guest Services team a call at (707) 857-1471, and they will be all ready for your arrival. The ‘Out-of-Town Tryout’ Tours are available at 12pm, 2pm and 4pm each day. Also, be sure to check our Facebook page for more information and fun.

The renovation of the east wing of Francis Ford Coppola Winery is on track, meaning RUSTIC, Francis’s Favorites, the two wine tasting bars, the outdoor terrace, our new Guest Services area and several display cases containing movie memorabilia will open to the general public as scheduled on July 27 (see above update). However, due to one of the longest rainy seasons in the last decade, the construction of the park area was delayed and will open in September.

This change in our plans, though, gives us the perfect opportunity to add some style and intrigue to our opening. Owner Francis Coppola reminded us that Broadway shows used to go on the road for Out-of-Town Tryouts and preview their performances in different cities before opening on Broadway. Borrowing this tradition, we are going to preview the winery and the soon to be completed attractions with our own version of Out-of-Town Tryouts.

As Francis said, “I realize I can’t really transport the entire winery site to the traditional tryout cities, Boston, New Haven, Baltimore, Washington D.C., and Philadelphia — but we can and will give visitors from those cities free wine tasting and pizza and a privileged tour through all the grounds to get their reactions.”

While wine tastings, select tours and dining in our restaurant will be available to the general public at the end of July, a new tryout city will be designated each week. Guests visiting from these cities will receive a private tour of the entire property and all of its features including the swimming pools and changing cabines, the outdoor poolside cafe, bocce courts, and entertainment pavilion among the gardens and pleasure-grounds designed by Academy Award-winning production designer Dean Tavoularis.

As big crowds are expected, the preview weeks provide the winery with a way to invite selected groups to safely tour the extensive grounds before the entire facility is open to the general public.
