In the film business, the “Director’s Cut” emerged as a means for filmmakers to present their own creative vision of a story. At Francis Ford Coppola Winery, Director’s Cut wines were created as a way for our winemakers to craft wines that would reflect their own unique interpretation of the quintessential Sonoma wine.
2020 was a challenging year, but Merlot shone through. Alexander Valley had an exceptional year for Merlot, bringing out all the beauty of the varietal. Small architecture of the grape clusters gave concen-trated flavors to the wine. During harvest, we ran micro-ferments to evaluate for quality, and found that the 2020 vintage wines are tasting exceptional!
Alexander Valley features two distinct climates, with the foggy southern portion of the appellation being cooler than the north. Much of the fruit for Director’s Cut Merlot comes from our own estate where warm daytime temperatures give way to cool evenings. This temperature differential extends the growing season and helps create well-balanced fruit. Soil diversity further contrib-utes complexity by delivering a broader range of flavors.
