Wine Notes
Our 2018 Virginia Dare Chardonnay is one of our best yet. Barrel fermented to enhance a creamy texture and coax out spice notes and a butterscotch finish, the wine's bouquet offers aromas of lemon, peaches, cinnamon, and buttercream. The palate is rich and silky with good weight. Flavors of pears and pineapple brûlée follow and linger on the finish with just a hint of citrus and minerals.
The Russian River Valley is an ideal environment for vineyards thanks to a unique combination of powdery clay soils, diurnal temperatures along the river basin, and a nightly incursion of fog creating a cooling effect which helps the fruit retain its natural acidity. Each vineyard lot contributes traits that reflect its exact place of origin that, when blended together, create a Chardonnay that is balanced and complex. Fruit from the warmer reaches of the valley add tropical tones, while grapes residing in the cooler regions provide citrus notes, structure, and intensity on the palate.
The 2018 growing season saw light precipitation through spring and then steady mild heat over the course of the summer, with occasional days of excessive temperatures. These conditions created extremely well-balanced grapes and a good healthy crop yield. We harvested a few weeks later than we did on the previous vintage, thrilled by exceptional quality across the board.
