A Vision Beyond Wine

Inspired by Tivoli Gardens in Copenhagen and classic American “pleasure parks,” Francis Ford Coppola imagined an inviting destination offering activities appealing to all ages – from playtime for children to wine tasting for grown-ups.

Origins of the Estate

The property, located in Geyserville, has winemaking roots stretching back to 1973, when it first opened as Chateau Souverain. Over the following decades, it passed through several hands before ultimately becoming part of Francis Ford Coppola’s vision—each era leaving its own mark on the estate’s winemaking tradition and architecture. Designed with the grandeur of a French château and inspired by Sonoma’s hop kilns, the estate’s copper roofs and pyramid skylight set the stage for something extraordinary.

The Coppola Era

In 2006, the Coppola family purchased the estate, transforming it into a place that reflected Francis’ philosophy: blending the best of wine with the joy of storytelling, hospitality and togetherness. The winery’s vineyards, including old-vine Zinfandel, Cabernet Franc and Negroamaro, became the heart of its vineyard program, while new wine portfolios such as Director’s Cut, Diamond Collection, Eleanor and Archimedes showcased its artistry in wine.

The History of Francis Ford Coppola Winery

1973

The winery was built as Chateau Souverain, laying the foundation for decades of winemaking.

1976

Ownership changed hands to a limited partnership of growers, renamed Souverain Cellars.

1986

Nestlé’s Wine World Estates acquired Souverain, returning “Chateau” to its name.

1996

Beringer Wine Estates purchased Chateau Souverain, preserving its winemaking tradition.

2006

The Coppola family purchased the historic Chateau Souverain property in Sonoma County, beginning a new chapter for the estate.

2008

Renovations began, transforming the winery into a family-centered destination that blended wine, hospitality and storytelling.

2010

The winery opened its newly renovated tasting room, the Coppola Movie Museum and Rustic, Francis’s favorite restaurant.

Present

The winery has grown into the most visited destination in Sonoma County, continuing to offer diverse wine portfolios and experiences that celebrate family, heritage and the joy of shared moments.
