Our Reserve Viognier originates from Catie's Corner Vineyard, a Russian River Valley vineyard comprised of sandy clay loam soils. This vineyard experiences diurnal temperature variations that can create a day-to-night temperature difference of as much as 50 degrees. This phenomenon allows the fruit to ripen more slowly and develop an optimal balance, which ultimately creates a more layered, complex wine. As a result, our Viognier strikes a lovely balance between rich, ripe fruit, and crisp natural acidity, which is often hard to achieve in warmer climates.
Our grapes are harvested in the early morning hours because cool temperatures ensure that the fruit retains a high level of natural acidity. Likewise, the grapes are crushed and fermented at a cool temperature to protect the delicacy of the varietal. Finishing occurs in stainless steel so that the resulting wine maintains its pretty floral fragrance. The Francis Coppola Reserve Viognier of 2012 presents a gorgeous perfume of apricots, guava, exotic spice notes and floral impressions of hyacinth. Exceptionally balanced with good body and luscious flavors of pineapple and tropical fruits, the wine shows its complexity with alluring notes of honey, cloves, and orange blossoms.
